– Erik Duvander

A World class Kiwi on the World stage.

Jesse’s Story

At  22  Jesse established his own competition yard in the picturesque Downs of Marlborough, here he has quickly established a reputation as a talented horseman of integrity with a skilled eye for selecting and producing top horses.  After watching Jesse ride at Boekelo’s CCI4* Captain Mark Phillips wrote:

” The rider who caught my eye was New Zealand’s Jesse Campbell. He rode across the country with all the class trademarks that have stood Mark Todd and Andrew Nicholson in good stead for so many years. He has not been in Europe long, but he will surely be a powerful addition to the kiwi team…” –  Horse&Hound, November 2012

Growing up in New Zealand

Jesse developed as a young rider in an environment renowned for its freedom and variety – riding over farmland, beaches, hunting, excelling at Pony Club and College Eventing, Show Jumping, Dressage and Games. He became a Champion Equitation rider and at 14  was selected onto the NZ Eventing senior Talent ID Squad.1909620_7636790409_8293_n

From a young age Jesse was passionate, determined and hardworking. He pursued every window of opportunity from riding, breaking in horses and working  beside senior riders for no financial reward – purely to gain experience and develop his skills.

Jesse attended St. Peter’s School Cambridge with a five year General Excellence Scholarship, winning numerous awards for leadership and sport that included: Year 11 Sportsman of the Year, Waikato Junior Sportsman of the Year, Trinity College Melbourne Exchange scholarship, a French Ussell Club rugby contract offer, Prefect,  and the supreme NZ Prime Minister SPARC Future Champion award – the only NZ event rider to be presented with this award.

Developing NZ thoroughbred x-racehorses into eventers set Jesse up to ride with his trademark sensitivity and feel. He developed a number x-racehorses to international level: ‘Volitation’ to Advance and selection to represent New Zealand at the Trans-Tasman Eventing Championships. ‘Vincenzo’ to NZ Young Rider Dressage Championships – this Galileo thoroughbred went on to become New Zealand’s multi supreme Show Hack. ‘Kaapachino’  to consistent international competitor, 4* Eventer, New Zealand representation at Nations Cup championships, and helped qualify a New Zealand eventing team for 2016 Rio Olympic Games.  Jesse also represented New Zealand in Australia, he and ex-racehorse ‘Confidential’ won gold in the Trans-Tasman Team championship.

Jesse’s passion, focus and work ethic saw him develop rapidly under the eye of Erik Duvander.  He quickly progressed to be at 21 years of age the youngest rider selected to the team of nine riders on the High Performance NZ Eventing squad based in the United Kingdom.

    Giving Back

Jesse has a strong ethic to ‘give back’ to his community. He has worked with community groups and committees to help further rider’s knowledge, access to facilities and competitions, and has contributed his time and coaching skills to help a young Waikato rider achieve a goal and claim double Gold medal success at the Special Olympics.

Jesse readily shares his knowledge to help young riders, he is known for his support to New Zealand riders during his annual trip  home. In 2015 and again in 2016 he organised  and extended generous training opportunities at his UK stables for young New Zealand riders wanting to develop their skills.

Jesse also initiated a pre- Christmas rugby match between the UK based International Eventers verses the Vets & Farriers,  which rapidly gathered momentum – no doubt due to the fact no-one could remember the injuries they sustained when they last played. The game was a huge success for all, with Newbury Club donating their No.1 field. As well as having a fun filled day that brought the international equestrian community together in mid winter, the game raised awareness and funds for the Claire Lomas Foundation and the Injured Jockey Fund.Rugby-Eventers versus Vets and farriers
